Why does my ANZSIC code matter to a lender?

Because most lenders write credit policy industry by industry, the ANZSIC code sitting against your ABN decides which set of rules gets applied to your application. It feeds risk grading, the products you are offered and sometimes a flat decline. Plenty of businesses carry a code that was picked years ago by whoever registered the ABN. If the code says one thing and your bank statements say another, expect questions.

What the code actually drives

Credit policy is written industry by industry, so the code is the first fork in the road for your application.

  • Restricted lists, where some lenders will not fund certain sectors at all
  • Appetite caps, where a lender is already heavy in your industry that quarter
  • Risk grading and pricing, since sector default data feeds the scorecard
  • Product rules, like progress claim conditions that apply to construction codes

None of this is visible to you. You just see a decline or a rate that seems out of step with how the business is trading.

What to do if yours is wrong

Your code is not shown on the public ABN Lookup, so you have to log in to the Australian Business Register itself to see what is recorded. Plenty of owners find a code from a business they no longer run. Your accountant or tax agent can usually update it in a few minutes. Do it before you apply rather than mid application, because a change part way through raises its own questions. Where the code is right but reads oddly, a broker can put the real trading activity in front of credit with the evidence behind it.
