When should I refinance business debt?

The best time to refinance is before you are under pressure, not after, when a facility is coming up for renewal, your bank statements show the business has outgrown its current loan or rates in the market have moved and your existing deal has not. Waiting for a problem to force the issue tends to narrow your options and your negotiating position. A calm look every couple of years costs nothing and often turns something up.

The usual triggers

A handful of moments tend to prompt a sensible business owner to look at refinancing.

  • A fixed rate period or an interest only term is about to end
  • The business has grown and now presents better to lenders than it did a few years ago
  • You picked up a facility quickly to solve a problem and never revisited the terms
  • Several smaller debts are due around the same time and coordinating them is getting messy

None of these need to happen all at once, one is often enough to make the exercise worthwhile.

The cost of waiting

There is often a quiet assumption that refinancing is a hassle best left for later. In practice a slow facility can cost more over a year than the time it takes to compare options properly. Rates move, businesses change and a loan that was a good fit three years ago is not guaranteed to still fit now. It does not need to be dramatic, a straightforward comparison against what is currently available is usually enough to tell you whether it is worth pursuing further.
