I have already applied direct to a lender, can a broker still help?

Yes, though it depends on the lender, because many treat a deal as belonging to whoever lodged it first and will not accept the same application through a broker for a set period. That window commonly runs a few months. It does not stop a broker helping you elsewhere. Tell us where you have already applied at the first conversation so nothing gets lodged twice by accident. A double lodgement helps nobody and it is easily avoided.

How lender deal ownership works

Most lenders record an application against the channel that brought it in. If you went direct and the deal is still sitting in their system, a broker submitting the same application usually gets told it already exists. Some will release it if you ask them in writing. Others hold it for a period that often runs a few months from the last activity on the file rather than from the day you applied. The rule exists so two parties cannot claim the same deal. Once everyone knows the position it is easily worked around.

Where a broker adds value now

A pending or declined application does not close the market. Our panel runs to 100+ lenders and only one of them is holding your file. A broker can work out where else the deal fits, why the first lender hesitated and how to package it properly for the next one. If the direct application was declined, that reason matters more than the decline itself. Avoid firing off applications to several lenders at once, because a run of credit enquiries in a short period reads badly to everyone who looks afterwards.
