Will my broker still help me after the loan settles?

A good broker stays on the file after settlement, handling annual reviews, drawdowns, rate conversations and the next facility down the track. Most commercial facilities need attention every year, so this is not a small thing. Not every broker works that way. Some are transactional by design. If all you hear after settlement is silence, that tells you what the relationship was. Ask the question before you engage, then judge it by what happens in year two.

What ongoing support looks like

Annual reviews are where a broker earns their keep. Financials go back to the lender, covenants get tested and pricing can be revisited, all of which goes better with someone who knows the file. Beyond that, expect help drawing on a facility, adding equipment, releasing a security, restructuring when the business changes shape or going back to the market when the rate stops making sense. Ours also field the awkward calls, the month a covenant looks tight or a payment is going to be late.

Questions worth asking up front

Settle this before you sign an engagement, not eighteen months later when you need something.

  • Who will I be dealing with in a year, you or someone else?
  • Do you review my facilities each year without me asking?
  • What happens if I need a variation or an extra drawdown?
  • Are you paid anything ongoing on this loan?

That last one is fair to ask and you should get a straight answer. How a broker is paid varies, so ask rather than assume.
