Business loan broker or a comparison website?

A comparison website is fine for a rough sense of the market, but it can’t assess your actual deal the way a broker can. Comparison sites generally work off standard products and simple inputs, which suits a basic small facility reasonably well. A big ticket or unusual deal, multiple entities, mixed security, a business with real complexity behind it, needs a human who can actually read the file and speak to a credit team directly, not a dropdown menu.

Where comparison sites fall short

A comparison website works from a database of published rates and standard eligibility rules. It has no way to know that a particular lender is currently hungry for equipment finance deals in your industry, or that another one is quietly tightening up on a security type you happen to have. It can’t negotiate, can’t explain a messy year in your financials to a credit assessor and can’t restructure a deal that gets knocked back. For a simple, small, vanilla facility that might not matter much. For anything bigger it usually does.

What each one is actually good for

A comparison site is a reasonable starting point for a general feel of where rates sit before you have a serious conversation with anyone. Treat it as background reading, not a shortlist. A broker takes over where the website runs out of road, understanding your actual business, matching it to lenders likely to say yes and doing the negotiating and paperwork you’d otherwise be doing yourself, on top of running the business you’re actually trying to finance in the first place.
